Abstract

Several existing projects in the area of vehicular networks are based on the use of heterogeneous networks and new protocol stacks, being expensive and hard to deploy. In this work, I will define the major guidelines of an all-IP VANET architecture where the access is entirely supported on WiFi access. To support my proposal, in this work, I started by evaluating the type of scenarios, considering both highway and urban environment, as well as the network architectures. Routing and medium access protocols are key issues of a network and therefor, a survey of the most relevant research work on both fields is of prime interest. According to my analysis, one of the routing protocols is adequate for my solution whilst none of the medium access protocol is. Thus, in the end of the paper, I will propose a VANET architecture that uses an existing routing protocol and a modified version of 802.11 MAC. The proposal will be validated during the thesis work, according to the scientific methodology and work plan that is presented in this paper.
